The idea of basic live betting is that you can predict a game play by play faster than your booking agent can determine the odds and propose a bet against the odds you already understand in a particular situation. The concept comes from European sports agents, simply because there are going to be people who want to bet on the outcome of a penalty kick in a football (soccer) game, or what may happen in a rugby match when a particular player gains control of the ball and the field. Although live betting is fast and often inspired rather than planned, there are most certainly means you can incorporate toward hedging strategy and maintaining your overall plan to win rather than lose money throughout the season.
Betting Live versus Pre-Arranged Bets
The first thing to understand about what is live betting is that each bet is “spur of the moment” and doesn’t leave you with time to second guess or review odds. As opposed to the idea of pre-arranged bets against the outcome of the game, or in some cases with parlay or teaser bets which may include a particular action to happen during the game, live bets are dependent on the game itself as it unfolds and while it is happening in real time.
Another style of live betting is traditionally discouraged, but involves determining the winner after the game has started based on the performance of each team on a given day. Consider how betting closes on a horse race or boxing match, as nobody is going to back a bet once an actual winner has become apparent. Betting can be different in team sports as sometimes a close game is not determined by statistics and sports news throughout the week, but by how a team woke up that morning. A star player consistently performs well, but there is no way to predict how well they might sleep in a hotel room with unfamiliar bedding. Likewise, someone’s diet may result in discomfort and affect their performance, or concern about a spouse or child at home can be a distraction against their ordinary game play. Pre-arranged betting is based on a player and team’s overall consistency, but live betting allows for the incongruity of daily life which the players experience.
Strategies to Use
Unfortunately, the very nature of live betting disallows the concept of utilizing a fail proof strategy. There is always the plan of “backing the favourite,” but there isn’t time to research and determine the favorite when placing a live bet. One strategy to use is similar to the bets made earlier in the week, which is to maintain your betting units and understand how to set and maintain a bankroll. A common problem people find in live betting is to get caught up in the moment and lose sight of the greater goal they want to accomplish, which is typically to win a little money or at the least, spend a bit to help become intertwined with the game and develop a deeper understanding of the sport.
Maintaining Your Bankroll and Betting within Limits
The one winning strategy which can never be over emphasized is to maintain your bankroll and keep to your unit bets. In keeping with a soccer game example, it’s easy to get excited about a penalty shot you “know” is going to score, but you don’t want to lose everything on that one shot when the goalie makes an unpredictable save. What makes more sense is to bet one, or perhaps two, units according to what you’ve already determined is feasible as a percentage of your bankroll so you can enjoy your win and have the money available for the next bet. Such a strategy allows for the occasional loss, which really is the reason for betting. If people could predict with absolute certainty what will happen next in the game, nobody would bet on the outcome, that is in fact the very definition of “gambling.”
Fighting the Odds as They Change
Ultimately, the whole concept of live betting is how it allows you to fight the odds as they change throughout the game. Nobody hopes for a player to be injured, but once it happens and the person is removed from the field the odds you may have expected for the game’s outcome may change. A player who is ejected for a major rules violation can make a team’s strategy change as the coach determines how to win without the player who was integral to the team’s success, or the input of a second string player can lead to unexpected scoring which isn’t consistent with the team’s overall statistics which you would generally bet with.
Nobody would bet if a live game was as predictable as computer statistics. Some outcomes are fairly well known in advance, but nobody can say with certainty what might happen during the game. The fundamental aspect of live betting remains consistent with your overall betting strategy. Have fun and use the bets to enhance your enjoyment and knowledge of the game. Ideally you’ll win some money, and your booking agent and the backer will be almost as happy for you as you are, but keep it reasonable and understand what your limits are.
